Even though the smartwatch industry is growing at a fast and steady pace, there are still big holes in the current offering of form-factors and design approaches. A Chinese company called Elephone seems to be aware of this, and their new smart watch, the Elephone W2, is a very unique because it has no LCD display at all.

Design and Build

The smart watch features a mechanical movement (Rhonda762, to be more precise). All technology is hidden under its elegant exterior. The simple design is equally suitable for formal events as it is for casual, everyday use. The face has not numeral, just metallic lines and two matching hands. Elephone certainly deserves praise for not ruining the look of this beautiful smartwatch with excessive branding. There’s just a small Elephone logo under the 12 o’clock mark.

The watch comes in two different colors (silver and gold) and a leather strap. The strap has a checkered patterned printed onto it. From a distance, the pattern definitely resembles the look of carbon watch straps. We are not sure whether it’s the best choice. The rest of the smart watch is very clean, and we believe that a simpler, plain strap would be more suitable. However, it’s attached to the watch using a regular lug and pin mechanism. This means that it will be easily replaceable with just about any matching strap out there.

Features of Elephone

The Elephone W2 smart watch hides a very compelling assortment of useful features. The watch can be used to track sleep patterns, daily movement or fitness activity. It’s also a great companion to a regular smartphone as it can discreetly notify you about incoming phone calls, daily appointments, and many other things.

Everything is configured via the dedicated Android application developed exclusively for this watch. It communicated with the watch using Bluetooth and provides an easy-to-understand interface for displaying sensor data and configuring how the watch behaves. This approach actually makes a lot of sense because smartwatches with LCD screen still require you to take out your smartphone for just about everything. This way, you get all the benefits of a regular smartwatch in a much more elegant package. Not to mention that the watch will cost just a fraction of what you would pay for something like the Apple Watch or the Huawei Watch.

The watch is now on pre-sale on Elephone’s website. Shipping starts from 25th, January 2016.
