There is no shortage of great portable chargers on the market. Each manufacturer is trying the very best to offer consumers something better than the competition. Anker, the company behind the Anker Astro E5, has managed to stand out from the crowd with their 16,000 mAh charger, which features their exclusive PowerIQ fast-changing technology.
Build and Design
The Anker Astro E5 is built out of drop-resistant plastic materials and is covered with a shiny black or white finish. The whole unit feels very solid in hands and the finish doesn’t attract fingerprints nearly as much as we were afraid it would do.
Unlike many other chargers, the E5 is quite tall and narrow. This makes it feel pretty hefty, but it still fits comfortably into any larger pocket, bag, or pouch. There’s really nothing to complain about as far as the design goes.
The charger displays its current capacity using four status LED lights. Each of them represents 25% worth of battery capacity and are clearly visible under all light conditions. The top side houses two USB output ports (one is rated at 2A and the other at just 1A), one micro USB input port, and a single power button used for turning but the charger and the built-in flashlight on and off. To turn on the flashlight, simply double-tap the power button. All in all, the operation is straightforward and you can definitely get by even without reading the included manual.
Anker Astro Charging and Performance
The main selling point of this portable charger is the exclusive PowerIQ technology, which is able to detect what kind of power input is your device capable of accepting and deliver charging speed up to 3A, based in this information. The importance of this technology becomes apparent when you consider that the Anker Astro E5 uses premium Panasonic cells that together provide 16,000 mAh capacity.
What does this mean in reality? Well, a regular iPhone 6 can be charged up to 6 times, the iPhone 6 Plus and Galaxy S6 four times, and the iPad Air more than once. During our testing, we were able to charge Kindle Fire HD two times and still have plenty of power left for the built-in LED flashlight.
The charger itself takes approximately 9 hours to charge from 0% to 100%. Of course, you are advised to use a high-quality power source capable of delivering a constant high current.
In conclusion, the Anker Astro E5 is well worth your money. It offers a fantastic capacity, small form factor, reliable fast charging, and it even has a built-in LED light, which can be extremely handy for emergency purposes. In the day and age when we carry at least one battery-powered device on a daily basis, having a portable source of extra power is indispensable.
What’s in the box?
The Astro E5 Portable Charger comes with micro USB cable, travel pouch, an obligatory user’s guide, and 18-month warranty. We really appreciate that the company isn’t afraid to stand behind the quality of their product. If only other companies did the same thing.
